Why Eat? What Do I Eat?

Fiber (20 to 30 grams/day):

Soluble fiber is found in fruits, oats and rye among other foods to combine with water for slow food passage. Combine vegetables and wheat bread to accelerate food passage.

Calories (depends on kg):

Over 3500 calories could increase on pound of body fat, while under 3500 calories could decrease one pound of body fat.

Protein:

To help maintain healthy muscles when combined with diet and exercise. This will support red blood cell production, boost immune system, and protein will keep the hair, fingernails and skin healthy. Whey protein, red meat, poultry, fish, eggs, milk, yogurt and cheese are common foods that are taken for protein.

Fats:

Saturated solid state at room temperature are non-dairy creamers, high fat meats, french fries and pastries; but, unsaturated fats are liquid at room temperature such as oil fish, nuts and seeds (polyunsaturated fats are good for you).

Large bowl of oatmeal w/raisins, walnuts and real maple syrup
Large glass of orange juice
Multivitamin
Prevagen
Coffee (black)

Mid-Morning:

Apple

"We don't know what we've got til it's gone"

This semester has completely gone away. As I read that the last post I made was in September it seems like yesterday I was just starting my last Fall semester here at Harding. I guess life will never slow down when there is a bundle of information to learn, friends to hang out with for the last time, new people to meet, papers to write, kids to feed, etc. Life will continue to add more to the agenda, and the best part is we will continue to keep on trying to finish everything on our plate and not even know what we had in front of us.

A difference...

I am in the mood to write because I can not concentrate on anything else, but my mind is just moving from point-to-point on different topics trying to concentrate on one idea and nothing is working.

I am sure that everyone has been in a situation were they have so much to say, but have put off writing everything down with all the information glued in the brain.

The old testament is a library of 39 books written mostly in Hebrew, but parts written in Aramaic. The "Hebrew Bible" was written over a time period of approximately 1000 years. The scriptures function as writings for Jews and Christians and to some extent for Islam; all three religions stem from a common ancestor, Abraham.

The first five books that make up the Pentateuch are: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy.

The first story that we read, that is well known, God permits the first couple to eat from any tree in the garden except from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. With this story Adam and Eve provide explanations of the basic aspects of our lives, pain and child birth.

To understand were "testament" comes from there has to be an understanding of Latin. The term testament comes from the Latin term that means covenant.

A passage form the Old Testament (OT) book of Jeremiah anticipates the establishment of a new covenant between God and Israel.

Three themes of the OT are: Creation, Election and Blessing.

From Genesis chapter 12, we read that God selected Moses as a means to bless all the nations of the earth; Moses lived around 1300 BCE (Before Common Era). Abraham lived around 2000 BCE and David lived around 1000 BCE. This Abraham character was given circumcision as a sign of God's covenant with him.

Jacob has 12 sons, whose descendants later became the 12 tribes of Israel. Jacob moved his family to Egypt due to a famine.

The events of Adam and Eve, Abraham and Jacob are all recorded in the book of Genesis. The book of Genesis is often divided into two major parts; the first part is designed as "Primeval History" (Gen 1-11), and the second major part is usually designed as "Ancestral History" (Gen 12-50).

The Ancestral History is divided into three major sub-divisions; the Abraham cycle, the Jacob cycle and the Joseph saga make up the divisions.

The Abraham cycle which begins with "the call of Abram". Following the initial episode, throughout the "Abraham Cycle", Abraham responds to the circumstances of his life with either "Fear" or "Faith". This "Abraham Cycle" concludes with the near-sacrifice of Issac. Now the three correspondences between the first and last episode of the "Abraham Cycle" are: "go to the land", the silent obediance and trust and the start in Moreh and the end in Moriah. The one thing that we haven't mentioned that is key is the heart of the "Abraham Cycle". The heart of the "Abraham Cycle" is the divine covenant. One event that occurs twice in the "Abraham Cycle", but is not the only even that occurs twice, is the saving of Lot.

To compare two covenants that are made in Genesis we see that the rainbow that was given after the flood was made as a universal covenant while the Abrianic covenant was only given to the nations.

Abraham moved from Canaan to Egypt because there was a famine just like Jacob and his family moved to Egypt because of a Famine (I guess it should be the other way around for the movement scenario, but the picture is clear). This movement to Egypt brought about the "Say you are my sister" act that Abram told Sarai. At this time the Egyptian Hagar became Sarai's slave.

Ishmael had 12 sons just like Jacob. One important lesson that we can gain from the expulsion of Hagar and Ishmael is that God works through those outside the community of faith. This might be hard to think about because tradition says that all outside of Israel at this time is wrong, but if you read Amos 9:7 what is the implications there?

How does Ishmael play into the role of the Israelites? Well since Sarai could not bear any children Abram bore a child through Sarai's slave Hagar, from Egypt, and "now you have conceivd and shall bear a son. You shall name him Ishmael, for the Lord has heard your affliction" (Gen 16:11).

Mann believes the central issue, or focal point of the "Abraham Cycle" is the "issue of the son".

Read through Genesis 15 ad tell me what you think God passing through the animal parts mean. Mann believes that "if I [God] do not keep the covenant may what happens to these animals happen to me".

The story of Sodom and Gomorrah story in Gen. 18-19 shows that the real protagonist is not Lot, but Abraham.

The events of Moses and the escape of the Hebrews from Egypt are recorded in the book of Exodus. In remembrance of the great act of deliverance from Egypt, God commands his people to celebrate the Passover.

Under the leadership of Joshua, the Israelites croseed the Jordan, carried out a swift military conquest and claimed the land as their own.

The three promises God made to Abraham are: land, great nation and blessing to all nations.

David established Zion or Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

If there is an inclusio in the biblical text there would be a word or phrase that appears at the beginning and the end or that text.

The designation "Babel" is a wordplay for the name "Babylon".

Chosen One...

Harry Potter is what they call the "chosen one". People make fun of him for it, love him for it but in the sixth book, because I haven't read the seventh book yet, this is referred to all the time, talk about pressure. He is the one that is going to lead them into battle to fight and destroy the "one-we-do-not-speak-of".

I like the fact that people do not want to talk about the "owdnso". The only thing is that they do so out of fear, the characters in the book are afraid of "owdnso".

I feel that sometimes we give our savior the title" chosen one", but we are afraid of the devil, "the-one-we-do-speak-of". I am not claiming there is a devil, but that is note for another time because I want to talk about the chosen one. How he has conquered over death and given us life.

Col 3:12 says, "As God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothes yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience".

This sounds so nice and easy, and it really is if we except the resurrection of Christ; for we "were also raised with him through faith in the power of God" for we are "God's chosen ones".

As an Irish writer put it, "There comes a point in many people's lives when they can no longer play the role they have chosen for themselves". We are not a "chosen wizard", but a "chosen child of God".

Doubt

People doubt all the time the potential that I have. I have doubted many times the abilities that I have. I notice sometimes that I give into the struggle of keeping focused, but then remember "Life without suffering...would be a form of death. Life depends in some mysterious way on the struggle to be." -D. Hall

(My adviser told me I would fail. Who needs someone to lean on in college and someone that is supposed to help encourage you tell you "you are no good"? She is no longer my adviser.)


Individuals always say, "How do I get a shot at being a leader, and using my talents when I have to start at the bottom"? Well my answer to that is "everyone" not just a couple people, but "Everyone wants to play in the tournament. The rules are straightforward; you must start at the bottom to have a shot at the top."

So, how do I need to set my agenda to keep disappointing the doubters, or having the shot at the top? Putting yourself at risk and work long demanding hours will show what type of person you are. If you want to be competitive in a field that has a fortune to be earned you will have to take risk you will have to work 11 times harder than you are right now. But let me say, choosing status over results will lead to failure, choosing popularity over accountability will lead to failure, choosing certainty over clarity will lead to failure, choosing harmony over productive conflict will lead to failure, and choosing invulnerability over trust will lead to failure. These are not my full 100% thoughts, but this is what I believe and will try to achieve.

Yet I will have to suffer, put up with peoples doubt, start at the bottom, put in long hours, try and choose what is right, loose friends, fall down, retake a class and be far from those I love, the fight is well worth it even if there is doubt!

Presentations

This is probably the year that I am going to break my lifetime record for presentation. I continue to have presentations to prepare for, but it has turned out so far to be a benefit. I not only have class presentations, but I also have presentations for different disciplines around Harding University. Hopefully the time spent on developing presentations will be beneficial for life.

Tired/Frustration

I have been working on some homework now for about four hours, and I think it is time to take a break. This always happens when I want to get more accomplished, but my brain just doesn't work.

For example, there is a box and I can't hear inside the box, smell anything happening in the box or see in the box. I ask myself, what is going on in the box? As a matter of fact I don't even know what the box is or the shape of the box. There is no movement, that I know of, but there is just a box sitting somewhere. The thing that might just be even stranger is what if the box appeard right in front of my as I am typing? Ok, I not only find the box, but I open the box and there is a dead cat inside the box. Remember that I didn't even know where the box was in the first place, and I couldn't give any characteristics of the box or what was happening with the box. Did I kill the cat by opening the box or was the cat already dead before opening the box?

These are the questions of "quantum mechanics" that I am not able to answer. I have been working on similar problems for the past eight days that have just kept me from updating this blog, but now is the time to break from the entraped questions that I am trying to solve, but keep me running in circles.

Some of the questions are just a matter of computer difficulty. The whole Microsoft system is totally messed up in the world of Josh. I guess I could understand my frustration more if I would devote my life to the computer language, but that is why I have a Chad (not a pregnant-chad).

I will say that this is good to challenge myself in many aspects of life; intellectual, spiritual, physical and social challenges are the obsticles that come to mind. As one would say, and normally I would give a T.R. quote, "Do first things first and second things not at all". But, today since I am tired and typing with six fingers because the other four are still numb from my 300 mile bike ride in 3 days, "303" I will share a piece of scripture that has me thinking. Hosea chapter one gives insight into history of or more emphasis on how Israel no matter how bad it was continued to disobey God. As many pick out verses from the New Testament speaking of the change in God's Deuternomical Theology, the Old Testament shows the choice that we have to make. Everything might be given to a child while he is young and knows not the difference between right and wrong (this is a parallel with Adam and Eve), but when the child is growing up and learning the difference between "good and evil" (Adam and Eve) there are choices now for the "adult" or "teenager" to make. The easy way, and I don't know if I can say this, but would be to choose the life of Judah. I see Judah as living with obedience. I see Israel continuing the life that leads to "No Mercy". Which part of this do stick or "box" needs to be opened and examined?

"707"...7 days away

I have not updated recently, but that is not an accident. I have a lot to get ready for this trip to happen. Believe it or not the discipline to train for this trip is getting easier-and-easier.

I have only 7 days before I take my cycling trip from Madison, Wisconsin to Searcy, Arkansas. I have been training hard, around 40 miles/day, and making sure that all my gear is ready to go. I also have started a new diet. I know this sounds weird, but to increase my nutrient, vitamin and mineral intake efficiently I have some dietary restrictions; only fruits, vegetables, whole wheats, lean (very lean) protein and vitamins should be consumed while I get my self prepared for the journey. Though with the amount of training I do, and needing to replace what I have lost, I consume around 6,000 calories/day.

I do not know what the weather is going to be like, I only have one other spot to find a place to stay (Chester, IL). God has been good to help me along the journey already. I have not, and I do not know who all has totally depended on God to provide each and everyday without worrying what is going to happen (yet we say the Lord's pray as if we have been in those situations like Jesus has). Some have been in these situations, and I give them much respect.*

I will be stopping in Sterling, Illinois with a friend and his family on August 11th. Then I will head to Pekin, IL on Aug. 12th. I will leave Pekin to make it to Carlinville, IL to stay with a member of the church and his family Aug 13th. After those 3 days I will stop in Chester, IL (Aug.14) and Bernie, MO (Aug 15). Then on my last stop, Aug 16, with a member of the congregation and his family in Trumann, AR. Once I have made it this far I will be trying my hardest to get to Searcy as fast as my legs can take me to get back on Friday August 17th to have a nice big meal!

People.

People are what make this world turn.

Life has been good to sing and to laugh for the majority of today's generation. People go to the bar to have a few drinks. Well, those few, for some, turn into more than a few, but that is why they went in the first place; to have fun, drink something they have never tried before and laugh to keep the days troubles from following them home.

Some people drink as a get away, but can never find the comfort in any sip, gulp or pitcher left empty. They just sit, watch and hope that the next drink will bring comfort, but they never think.

My favorite part about people is that they think and speak their mind...

That statement in itself is just a dog wagging its tail. People telling the truth and thinking before they speak? No, people do not like to tell the truth. They don't even think before they speak. Some just think compliments are made just to make compliments. Other people make compliments to one another and people turn these compliments into an insult as if their neighbor's dog had just crapped on their front porch. Or the person that received the compliment thinks that maybe the complimenter wants something in return. The complimenter just wanted to make a compliment. The complimenter is just like the manager that puts his employees in a situation to see if he/she can handle what was just thrown at them. Most employees just curl up and cry; they run away because they are afraid that life might change or ruin what they have on their own. Others think, "this might just make life a little better". They embrace the challenge and life ironically turns out better.

A friend of mine, for most of his life, did what girls liked. He would take them out on dates, and hold back a little to make sure everything went smooth. His thought was that the girl could hear his secrets, his dreams and what he was looking for later. Most people do not think, "I will tell the truth", and in turn they lose the opportunity for success. Soon the situation turns into a hurricane as if the man had just walked out of the eye of the storm. The trees blow hard to the point the "fun tree" just blows right over; pulling the roots right up from the ground. All that work kicked from under him just because he didn't think from square one. He then decided "forget all the rules that people have made up". He is now married because he actually found someone that heard everything from point one. He embraced the challenge and spoke his mind.

Invest or Wine test...

There once was a man that was full of confidence. He never had a doubt, well maybe one, but he always knew what was going on and if he could conceive it and believe it then the mind could achieve it.

Without giving this much thought he knows like everyman does that girls like attention. Without feeling excitement for being around the man she will develop boredom. She will not want to see him again because the wonderful attention is gone.

This gentleman liked the fact that a certain girl wanted attention. He didn't really care how he looked trying to win her over, but his attraction to her was strong. Maybe people do not understand what I am trying to say, but he still doesn't mind looking dumb trying to gain her trust; he has become vulnerable to win her over. He wasn't and still is not going to beat around the bush or play the game a different way, but he is going to make an investment.

Here is were we think, without thinking...

Girls and Guys are in the similar realm of living. Half the time, for a guy, the girl doesn't even call him back. He makes the statement along the lines, "there is no way she wants to hang out", but just when that happens he receives a message "hold on tight because soon we will be flying". He tries hard not to give in and call before the time is right because like all fairy tales this happens; the man always rushes in right away to make the call, but this man decides to not call because "soon we will be talking" is ringing in his head. He still walks into the arena with his head tall looking to gain an edge on the situation; he takes a risk, a chance at hanging in there.

These risks are similar to the stock market. Investing money and time into a particular company. Neglecting all other inquires to get something exciting, adventurous and hopefully will hold onto the owner of the bid. Sometimes though the investment decides to take a fall. Everyone is saying "hold on tight", but maybe he is not investing in the right stock. Do NOT buy more crappy stock little man in something that is not going to give more money back. Buying into a bad investment for this man just puts him in a losing situation that is not good.

This young man will "Seize the Opportunity" by not giving into the lack of investment. He tries and tries, but this time he gets up, dusts himself off, and walks out the door in hopes of buying something more. That is what everyone think, "[he] walks out the door", but instead of walking out the door, he tries to get back on the bull even if the bear is tearing him down.

He says to himself do not give in, never, but do not invest a third time into someone or some stock that is sucking the life out.

Maybe this wasn't clear enough...

Imagine a thing of wine, a whole barrel of wine for that matter and the girl takes a sip. Boy does that taste good, she says to herself "that was some good wine", but she forgets how good that wine really was. She leaves for a long time not even thinking about taking another drink. The wine doesn't know how good it is, but knows the labor put into squeezing the juices out of the grapes, alcohol, and all other ingredients placed in for the making. There is a lot of effort put into making a good wine. Forget the conversation because leaving the barrel open, the wine exposed, to let the girl drink some more without knowing when she will be back is going to waste, spoil or just let rats, cats and some other rodent try some of this 1984 bottle.

The girl will forget what wine she tried, and will not want to work to find the right barrel, open the barrel and drink some wine. She might have to go through a bunch of barrels to find what she needs, and if that is too much work then it was worth closing the barrel to let preserve what is left . This closing of the barrel needs to happen because without doing so will spoil the freshness, the taste, the smooth comfort that she will want to wrap her arms around. He must take the risk, but he will not invest into throwing something good away. If he wants to throw money away he will do so by no putting his heart into the arena, but this man will keep the heart fresh, and bring what is right into the arena to fight the battle.

He might have confidence that something is better out there, but without confidence what would he be?

The Copier!

The Copier!

The last day of May was a crazy eventful day; ok, that is a complete bamboozle being that I was at the library all day. The one exciting, crazy, and shining moment I had at the Ebling Library, which is the Health Science library at UW-Madison, was the copy machine. This sounds kind of weird, but the copy machine actually scans whatever you want to copy, and emails the copy wherever you want to send it. You could send the copy to a complete stranger if you really wanted to. Ok, you are correct that the copy machine was not the shining moment, but that machine was pretty cool. Actually I meet a girl in the library who I never saw before, but she had a wonderful smile that just lit up the room. After the occasional "how's the copier working for you?" I decided to go in for the kill. The "kill" after thinking about the concept a little more is actually a kiss. So, I guess I didn't really go for the "kill", but I did ask for her number. To tell you the truth that might have been the only time that I did not know someone, and ask for there number right out of the blue, but today was the day; the day of the copier where she graced my sheet of paper with her number.

I decided that I need to gain some advice on how I should approach the situation, seeing as I have never done this before. I sent a text to my friend in Illinois, asked my roommate, asked the Executive Assistant at work the next day, and the list could go on, but nothing would prepare me for the night I was going to have.

The rule as you know it is a two day maximum wait, but also there is a two day limit before you call the person. If you take more then two days to make the call she might forget who you are all together, but you go in for the kill right away she is going to think you are a complete creep.

This for me was a "wow" moment because this could be the most memorable date ever! Let us just assess the situation; I move to Madison with "knowing" three people total, I have an exciting job being a complete nerd and I spend the majority of my time in the Library or searching PubMed twenty-four seven, I continue on my adventure of the library only to find a girl with a bright smile, and a similar occupation/dream. What more could you ask for, right? Well, I need to call her before I get to excited. So, one Saturday I decided that I am going to call her, but had to make sure that I made it right after the two days, but before it was to late to do something that night. I waited until a complete 48 hours to utilize the situation at hand.

This is not your traditional date or your most liberal date experience, but it is creative I think from the very beginning. After seeing what she was up to, she pulled the 'ol "I have to see, what are you up to?" Ah ha! She is trying to play the game! I say, "You want to get a bite to eat? maybe Rocky's"? She laughs because that is a cheap pizza place, but my thought is if she doesn't like that I am poor, but also want something truthful to how I spend my Saturday, then she doesn't want to be with me. So, before our talk is over we make plans to meet at off the bike path at the intersection of Path and Murray St.

Ironically there is a basketball court which I plan to shoot some hoops to bring the game on the court. (that's what I'm talking about!!). It seems that the most common date I have in on the basketball court and the ones before this one have always gone wrong, but I have hope that this is going to work. After eating, and shooting some hoops I plan on walking down to get some ice cream, and by that time it will be dark enough to walk to a secret spot that I found on a run to skip rocks along the Lake Monona and see the capitol light shine bright in the sky.

Fast Forward

Let me say that everything was going ok until the skipping rocks was actually more along the lines of skipping the capitol lights. We didn't even make it to the walk before the ice cream, and the date ended when she rode off before forty-five minutes into the night.

Missing information from: Madison-Week 1

On my second day of work, Tuesday May 15th, I had the opportunity to work a little in the wet lab. I was exposed to SDS page gels, and how to run, process and analyze these gels. I also, had the privilege to produce the first sixty-four capsules of the drug PrevagenTM. Let me say that being the second day of work, and the company being in existence for three years, and being the first to make this drug is honoring.

I do want to make a disclaimer and say that I do not have the right to sell or produce PrevagenTM or take any claim that Prevagen is mine. Thanks to Quincy Bioscience I have had the opportunity to work with Prevagen, and I support Quincy Bioscience to the fullest extent.

On Thursday May 17th, I had another opportunity to see Ian Wilmut. I know this is not a name that everyone knows, but maybe if I said the name Dolly people might be able to put the two together. Well, if the connection is not being made let me help. Ian Wilmut is the leading scientist in cloning of many animals; Dolly being the one animal that has become, or I guess now became, popular in the United States. I was not the only person that was able to hear about his work, and have an hour lecture on how to clone animals, but nonetheless the time spent was something of a treat for us in the Biotech business or just science fanatics.

Another disclaimer is that I do not know how to clone, have no experience in cloning, and am not giving my endorsement to cloning.


By the way this is my sister Hannah's birthday, and I am sure she would love for everyone to wish her Happy Birthday!

Madison-Week 1

I was in complete disorientation when moving to Madison. That might seem a little over the top, but let me break down the analysis of my situation. I leave Searcy, AR to move to the Capital of Wisconsin, Madison, which has a variety of differences; culture, population, beliefs, economics, education, and if I really wanted to continue the list I could. But, I think the point is made that moving to a place where everything is different changes how one lives. Ok, enough with that I am going to tell you a little about week one.

I live 4.03 miles from my house to the front door of Quincy Biosciences office suite. I ride my bike to work on days that it is not raining, and use public transportation on days when the weather is out my hands. I work with Quincy Bioscience, and am a Research Intern for this Biotech Company.

I figured out that this summer is going to be a time of research (hench the name), and developing the template for the book that we are coming out with sometime this fall. So, I have a lot of things that I need to get done at work in the next three months.

The research that I will be doing is all library research on diseases, disorders or more importantly aging of the human body. Once I am able to find out more about the mechanism of these different diseases and disorders I will be able to discern if our dietary supplement, and therapeutic drug will work in restoring normal function.

This research will help not only my database skills or google skills, but also will help me learn about the physiological advances of therapeutics. The human anatomy is very complex, and if I am able to touch the surface of therapeutics, anatomy and physiology (especially the neurobiology of human life) then I will have the resources to help those in need, and add this knowledge to my repertoire.

I also did not know what expectations they had for me coming in this summer. I recently figured out the expectations that my boss has for me when we, CEO, Marketing Director and executive assistant, went out for dinner last night. Of course my boss is the President/CEO of Quincy Bioscience (QB), and the expectations are set high.

I am happy that I am here, and the expectations are set high to accomplish a lot during this summer for the benefit of the company, my life and hopefully this will be "The Tipping Point" (A book written by Malcolm Gladwell on "How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference") that benefits human life through knowledge of neurodegenerative disease and therapeutic ways to cure such diseases.
